24 Days of Rum 2023/11: William Hinton 5 Cask Blend 2023

William Hinton is rum brand from Portugal and one of the ussual rums appearing in this calendar. 2019 showed their basic 3 yo rum, 2020 showed Four Cask Edition, 2021 then 5 yo Peated whisky cask and finally 2022 had 5 Cask Blend. And this year we have it again, but one year older.

This rum is not directly from Portugal, but its from island of Madeira. It comes from distillery Engenho Novo da Madeira where is it placed as their agricole rum brand. It was created in 2006 by Hinton family, who already owned biggest sugar cane processing plant in Europe. So they are then using their historical column still for their rums.

William Hinton offers vermouth, white rum called Natural and rums aged for 9 months, 3 years or 6 years. And then there is stable offer of 5 kind of single cask, each aged in different cask. And that follow us here to this rum as 5 Cask Blend is blend of these rums used for their single casks. It consists for 4 years old aged in whisky casks, Madeira wine casks, brandy cask, fortified northern Portugal wine and fortified south Spain wine. Its blended only for this calendar and cant be bought in bottle, it has 45 % ABV.

Nose is soft and medium sweet, little bit grassy. There is some wood and hints of spices, forward are pushing gummy candies and sweet fruits. There are definitelly grapes, pears and peaches here. And also some chocolate. Overally it is guite light smell.

Taste is full and little bit fresh. There are definitelly gummy candies here, lots of them. It is little juicy and little sweet, there are fruit and agricole notes. Fruit grows stronger, they are sweet. And candies shifts into background, some chocolate stays again. Taste is soft and pleasant, almost creamy.

Aftertaste too starts with gummy candies, its less sweet. Then some spices and woodiness comes, also some juiciness. Candies are again dominating, but there are also sweet fruits, sweet wine and rubber there.

This rum is like light and pleasant almost-agricole. It is agricole, but softened and flavoured by five different casks. The longer I am drinking it, the better it seems. So in the end, this was really good rum. Maybe I should buy some Hinton outside of advent too.
