This day we look into rum brand and independent bottler called Mezan. They specialize in Caribbean rums, they are buying tropically aged rums and then give them second aging in cold Europe. Brand comes from year 2012 and from the start they are bottling uncolored and unsweetened rums, they are also not using chill filtration.
As I can see, Mezan offers lots of rums from Jamaica, Belize, Trinidad and Dominican Republic, they ghave simple colored labels, big name of the country and statement of vintage or XO on them. And after them there is Mezan Chiriqui. It has more complex and colorfull bottle, its the only one from Panama, has no age statement and special name instead.
Mezan Panama Chiriqui is distilled on modern multi column still from local molasses. Distillery grows its own sugar cane, which is later used for making rum and liquors. There is also fermentation done by historical kind of yeast kept in distillery. The basic aging is done in used ex-bourbon casks, but there is second aging which should be typical for Mezan rums. This rum is finished in Moscatel cask, sweet white wine from Portugal. Finally, rum has 40 % ABV and is quite cheap.
Nose is definitelly sweet, full of chocolate and sweet cocoa. Immidiatelly it show also tones of fruits and wine, there is also lots of coffee and spices. The smell is clear and reminds me of sweet and spicy coffee chocolate with pieces of fruits. Overal is little bit lighter and also very aromatic.
Taste is very soft and full of cocoa. There is also strong dark chocolate. Further in time I found coffee and hints of sweet woodiness, come coffee dessert. Then there are few hints of wine. The mounthfeel is full, there are also sone dry aromatic tones.
Aftertaste is strongly chocolaty, it is also quite sweet. But maybe a bit less sweet than nose and taste. There is also cocoa and hints of wood and coffee, its like coffee chocolate. Sweet wine shows for little time, also few dried fruits. Aftertaste is full, but litle bit shorter.
This rum is pleasant, one bit of sweet dessert. But thats maybe all, its straightforward sweet and spicy coffee chocolate. It is really not but, the other way. Its good rum, but it is not special to me enough to push it forward into the best sweet rums territory.
