Cristóbal is here quite known brand and several of them I already tasted. They also has bottle sold in supermarket here. Ron Cristóbal is named after Christopher Columbus, man who brought sugar cane to Caribbean. Rum comes from Dominican Republic, the core range starts with three bar rums – white Blanco, light Oro and golden Gran Anejo. After that there are two premium blends named after Columbus ships – Pinta and Nina. Nina is older of the two, aged from 8 to 12 years. And that leaves limited editions and vintages for the top.
Pinta should be premium blend and consist of tropically aged rums from 6 to 8 years old. Most of them aged in typical ex-bourbon barrels, some of the are using virgin french oak casks. The name Pinta is name of first Columbus ship for his voyage in 1492. Label is blue and strength is 40 % ABV.
Nose is quite strong, it starts with coconut, then comes strong chocolade. After that some caramel appears. Its like some coconut-cocoa bar. Its quite sweet and little bit juicy. Fruits are in background and appears more with opening of rum. After time I got here hints of coffe and whisky cask, some mandarines and ripe fruit. It has some funky hints too.
Taste is full, with lots of caramel and nougat. And with chocolate and coconut. Its like candy bar. Some coffee comes from background, also sweet spices and some bourbony woodiness. But there is still great deal of nougat and lots of caramel. It still quite sweet and bit juicy, is pleasantly strong and full, also very smooth.
Aftertaste is strongly nougtly and chocolately, there are some tones of nuts and spices. And some sweet woodiness too. Its little juicy, its very full and smooth.
Pinta is sweet kind of rum, but this is example of this done right. It is quite strong in flavour and overall good rum. Sweet but not too sweet and highly smooth. Well, for that price it is pleasant rum that can make a day better. For todays christmas mood it is good match.
